Yesterday and Today was my last Fabric Collage class as Wimberley Stitch Studio. I was asked if it was bitter sweet? Yes, I loved having classes in that classroom. When I moved into 704, I was thrilled to have almost 4x as much space as I did at 490 (The 390 square foot little gnome quilt shop…lol). Our new workroom in the back was half classroom and half longarm space. Then Merilyn had the garage closed in and remodeled into a 500 sq ft classroom. It was a wonderful space with lots of room for tables, chairs, design boards, ironing and cutting tables. It made having larger classes very convenient and fun.
The ‘girls’ in class were a great end to an era. Henri worked on her vintage floral Guardian angel, Mary Kay and Kay worked on little Peppermint the reindeer, Diane made a patriotic horse, Cindy made a mini “The Dress,” and Sharon made Llarry the Llama.
I love the feedback from my students that I am able to simplify the process with “NO RULES.” I encourage them not to work so hard at perfection with the shapes and to enjoy the process. It all turns out beautiful and they have fun in the process.
One student said she’d taken three classes and this time she just “got it.” That’s what I want is for students to understand the process and technique and then do it the way they enjoy it. We all learn differently, but if we can just let go of our own expectations for following a set of perceived rules we find that we are free to create.
